Staining or sealing is not required—our planters are made from Western Red Cedar, a naturally durable, weather-, rot-, and climate-resistant wood designed to withstand outdoor conditions over time.
That said, if you wish to preserve the original colour and extend the lifespan of the wood’s appearance, you may choose to apply a wood finish. One product we highly recommend is Osmo UV Protection Oil #410 Clear Satin, which is food-safe for vegetables and herbs. We also offer this as a kit on our website.
Other natural alternatives include beeswax or linseed oil, though these typically require yearly touch-ups. Osmo, in contrast, generally needs reapplication only every 4–5 years, depending on sun exposure.
Quick tip: Let your planter sit in direct sunlight for a month or two before sealing. This enhances the cedar’s rich natural tones, which you can then preserve with a clear coat to prevent fading to grey.
Whether you prefer to let your planter age naturally or protect the colour with a finish, the choice depends on your aesthetic preferences and maintenance goals.
